DLC is a thin carbon-based coating (1-3 microns) which is applied to the surface of the dents of the reed in order to extend their useful life.
The coating, applied uniformly to the dent, combines a high degree of hardness (up to 3000 HV), a low friction coefficient (0.1) and resistance to rust, and so greater resistance to abrasive wear of the dents is achieved.
These properties make DLC the “best known coating to date” for increasing the durability of reeds under severe conditions of abrasive wear.
