Electrolytic chrome plating consists in the application of a thicker coating (10-20 microns) to the surface of the dents of the reed in order to extend their useful life.
The coating, which is very hard (1000 HV) and highly resistant to rust, is applied uniformly to the dent. Chrome plating has proved to be effective in increasing the durability of reeds under conditions of high abrasive wear.
